Abandoned Farmhouse in the Midwest With a Yard of Mossy Classic Cars

An abandoned farmhouse with a yard of moss covered classic cars, including a Blazer, a Cutlass and a blue truck. Some had been hauled off since my last visit.

An abandoned farmhouse with a yard full of classic cars, all of them parked in tall grass with moss growing on the hoods. Whoever lived here collected a lot of cars, and the entire yard was like that. The exact location stays with me. It’s somewhere in the Midwest.

I had been here before, and I think there were more cars last time. Some of them looked like they had been removed from the property.

What we found

I don’t know if the owner finally came by and hauled things off, or if the city got involved. Either way there were still some cool classic cars here, parked among bare trees with the old house behind them.

The Blazer is one of my favorites, with all that moss growing on it. The inside looked like there had been a fire, unless it was all water damage.

There are some slightly newer cars parked in the lot too, and I really liked the blue truck.

The old Cutlass was absolutely beautiful. There were a lot of old Chevys all through the lot, and one I couldn’t place until I called it an Eagle. At one point I said another one looked like a Bel Air.

Why places like this end up empty

I don’t know who owned this property or why it was left, so I’m not going to guess. What I can source is the bigger picture. USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, as summarized by the American Farm Bureau Federation in March 2024, counted 141,733 fewer farms than in 2017, a drop of 7 percent. Since 1950 the number of farm operations is down by 3.75 million, or 66 percent.

The same summary says farms selling $1 million or more grew in number by 28,566 and produced 79 percent of the value of agricultural products sold in 2022, up from 69 percent in 2017. Smaller classes of farms shrank. The report covers farm counts and sales, and it doesn’t say what happens to the buildings, so I’ll stop at the numbers.

On my way out I still thought there had been more cars on my last visit.

Left behind

  • A yard full of classic cars parked in tall grass with moss on the hoods
  • A Blazer with moss all over it and an interior that looked burned or water damaged
  • An old Cutlass and a lot of old Chevys across the lot
  • A blue truck, some slightly newer cars, and what looked like an Eagle and a Bel Air
  • The old farmhouse behind the cars
